ABSTRACT:

The midwife is the person who is with the mother round ‘o’ clock & she is responsible for the monitoring the mother and child during labor process. In modern obstetrics partograph is not just a graphical record of cervical dilatation, but also a composite record of all the important feathers of a labor on a single sheet. Evaluative study approach and One group pretest- post test (Quasi experimental) design was used for the study. Modified structured knowledge questionnaire was prepared for collection of data. The 40 first year P.B.BSc Nursing students were selected from Krishna Institute of Nursing Sciences, Karad by Purposive sample technique. Data were collected by using structured knowledge questionnaire and analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Major findings related to demographic variables were  majority students 25(62%) belongs to age group 20-24 years . majority 19 (47.5%) were having less than one year of professional experience and 33(82.5%) were having less than one year working experience in maternity ward. Majority students 31(77.5%) were not exposed any in-service education programme on partograph. Level of knowledge in pretest majority 22.5% were in poor level, 77.5%were in average level and nobody was in good level and post test majority 5% were in poor level, 25%were in average level and 70%were in good level. Effectiveness of SIM in terms of gain in knowledge on partograph ‘t’ value was calculated. The calculated ‘t’ value (t=10.0) was higher than the table value (2.023) at df (39). It proved that SIM on partograph was an effective for increasing the student’s knowledge. For an association chi-square test was use there was no statistically significant association found between pre existing knowledge and demographic variables at df (39).The study concluded that SIM on partograph administered to the 1st year P.B. BSc. Nursing students was effective in increasing the knowledge.

INTRODUCTION:

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

In developing country like India, where majority of the population from rural area, and where there were no specialty hospitals, partograph serve as a major tool for a midwife to monitor the stages of labor for early detection of complications. According to Lavender T. Hart A Smyth R.M. the partograph is usually a pre printed paper form on which labor observations are recorded. It is tool that can be used by midwifery personnel to assess the progress of labor and to identify if interventions are necessary.

Studies have shown that using the partograph can be highly effective in reducing complications from prolonged labor for mother and newborn.

The midwife is the person who is with the mother round ‘o’ clock and she is responsible for the monitoring the mother and child during labor process. The important duty of midwife is to maintain record as a legal document. The partograph become an important record in the maternity ward. In modern obstetrics partograph is not just a graphical record of cervical dilatation, but also a composite record of all the important feathers of a labor on a single sheet. It is time saving and of educational value for all grades of staffs and students. As such it becomes important for the nurses to know about the partograph and how to plot it.

OBJECTIVES:

1.       To assess the knowledge of partograph among 1st year P.B.BSc. nursing students.

2.       To evaluate the effectiveness of self instructional module (SIM) on the knowledge of partograph among 1st year P.B.BSc nursing students.

3.       To find an association between pretest knowledge and selected variables.

HYPOTHESIS:

H1-There is a significant difference in the level of knowledge of 1st year P.B.BSc. nursing students on       partograph.

H2- There is a significant association of knowledge of 1st year P.B.BSc. nursing students on Partograph with selected demographic variables.

METHODS AND MATERIAL:

RESEARCH APPROACH AND RESEARCH DESIGN: A evaluative approach, one group pretest- post test (Quasi experimental) design was adopted for the study. The structured knowledge questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge of partograph among 1st year P.B.BSc nuring students.

SETTINGOF THE STUDY: The study was conducted in Krishna Institute of Nursing Sciences, Karad. Which is under Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Deemed University’s Karad.

POPULATION: Nursing student admitted for Post Basic BSc. Nursing.

SAMPLE ,SAMPLE SIZE AND SAMPLE TECHNIQUE: The sample of the study included 40 1st year P.B.BSc nursing student selected by Purposive sample technique.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION: Data was collected by using structured knowledge questionnaire. Day one- pre test followed by administration of SIM on  partograph. Day seven- post test.

STUDY VARIABLES:

DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES: Age, professional experience in years, experience in maternity units, attended any in-service education.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE: SIM on partograph.

DEPENDENT VARIABLE: Knowledge of 1st year P.B.BSc. nursing students.

PLAN FOR DATA ANALYSIS:

Descriptive statistics:-

·         Frequency and percentage distribution were used to study the demographic variables of the first year P.B.BSc. nursing students on partograph.

·         Mean median and standered deviation were used to determine the level of knowledge of 1st year P.B.BSc. nursing students on partograph.

Inferential statistics:

·            Chi square test was to find an association between demographic variables and level of of knowledge of 1st year P.B.BSc. nursing students on partograph.

·            Level of significance was fixed at 5% level.

RESULTS:

Related to demographic variables:

Majority students 25(62%) belongs to age group 20-24 years . majority 19 (47.5%) were having less than one year of professional experience and 33(82.5%) were having less than one year working experience in maternity ward. Majority students 31(77.5%) were not exposed any in-service education programme on partograph.

For an association chi-square test was calculated there was no statistically significant association found between pre existing knowledge and selected demographic variables at df (39).

CONCLUSION:

Based on above findings of the study, implications and recommendations were drawn for nursing service, administration, education and research. The study concluded that SIM on partograph administered to the 1st year P.B. BSc. Nursing students was effective in increasing the knowledge.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE STUDY:

1.       Similar study can be under taken with a large sample for better generalization of the findings.

2.       A similar study can be under taken with staff nurses.

3.       A similar study can be under taken with two groups as experimental and control

4.       An experimental study can be conducted to find out the effective way of plotting partograph.
